Wallpaper Hanging & Installation in London

Hanging wallpaper is one of those trades where you can spot an amateur job from across the room. We've been hanging paper across London for 15 years — hand-printed, grasscloth, murals, foil, flock and standard pattern.

Overview

Wallpaper Hanging across London

Wallpaper punishes bad prep more than any other finish. Every dent, hairline crack, screw hole and picture pin telegraphs through the paper within a week. Our wallpaper work starts with a full wall reinstatement — cracks filled, lining paper where the wall's uneven, sanded flat, mist-coated so the paper doesn't shift when it goes up.

We hang everything: hand-printed Cole & Son, hand-blocked Little Greene, De Gournay silk panels, Phillip Jeffries grasscloth, digital murals and standard pattern paper. Each requires a slightly different paste, book time and technique — grasscloth needs paste-the-wall and a light touch, silk panels want a specialist adhesive and gloved handling, murals need panel-matching and edge-trimming with a fresh blade every seam.

We also remove old paper properly — steam and scrape rather than tearing, so the wall behind isn't destroyed. If it's woodchip or lining paper that's been painted over ten times, we can talk you through the realistic cost of getting back to a paint-grade finish.

Our process

How a typical wallpaper job runs

  1. 01

    Sample & measure

We measure walls, calculate rolls with a proper waste allowance for pattern repeat, and check paper suitability.

  2. 02

    Wall prep

Cracks and dents filled, walls sanded and mist-coated, lining paper hung where the wall isn't flat enough.

  3. 03

    Set out

Laser line for the first drop, pattern registered, first seam plumb — the whole room depends on this.

  4. 04

    Hang & trim

Booked to the manufacturer's spec, brushed out from centre, seams rolled, trimmed with a fresh blade.

  5. 05

    Finish

Any bubbles rolled out, corners knifed, sockets and switches reinstated cleanly.

FAQs

Wallpaper Hanging questions, answered

How many rolls should I order?+

For a standard 10m roll and a 4x4m room with a 52cm pattern repeat, usually 6–8 rolls. We do a proper calculation at the site visit including waste for pattern matching — it's often less than the shop tells you.

Can you hang hand-printed paper like Cole & Son or De Gournay?+

Yes — we install hand-printed and hand-blocked papers regularly across London. Batch numbers checked before we start, gloved handling for silk and painted papers, and appropriate adhesive for each substrate.

Can old wallpaper be painted over?+

Usually not well. Seams show through, the paper can lift when painted, and the finish is inconsistent. We recommend stripping and re-lining for a proper paint-grade surface.

How long does one room take?+

A standard 4x4m room with plain lining and a mid-range pattern is typically 1.5–2 days including prep. Complex patterns, murals or grasscloth take longer.

Do you supply the wallpaper?+

Client-supplied is normal for wallpaper. We're happy to advise on brands and spec but the paper is yours to order — that way you own the batch and any spare rolls.
